Reasons to believe:

  • because I said so;
  • because God talks to me and told me to preach his message;
  • because that man over there said so;
  • because that woman on television said so;
  • because that man on television who God talks to said so;
  • because that man who is now dead said so;
  • because that woman who died for her belief said so;
  • because we will kill you if you don't believe;
  • because you will be punished severely after you die if you don't believe;
  • because they teach it in the church I go to;
  • because your mother and father said so;
  • because your grandfather / grandmother / great-grandfather / great great great great... ...great great great grandfather said so;
  • because the person you want to marry says so;
  • because everyone says so;
  • because the king said so;
  • because the king who rules by divine right said so;
  • because the queen who rules by hereditary divine right is also head of the church;
  • because the Apocalypse is coming, the Apocalypse is coming, the Apocalypse is coming.....
  • because the end is nigh;
  • because God is written on our money;
  • because God is referred to in our constitution;
  • because God is mentioned in our National Anthem;
  • because God is included in our Pledge of Allegiance;
  • because it is the law of our country;
  • because there is some stuff we don't understand, so God is the cause;
  • because even if they find reasons for stuff we don't understand, there will be other stuff we don't understand, so God is the cause;
  • because even if they find reasons for stuff we don't understand, they will be wrong, and God is still the cause;
  • because this book says so;
  • because this book inspired by God says so;
  • because this it is written in this book that it was inspired by God and God doesn't lie;
  • because if you believe, you are good;
  • because if you don't believe, you are evil;
  • because we aren't competent to decide what is right and wrong, and we need a God to tell us;
  • because sometimes things we wish for come true;
  • because sometimes good things happen;
  • because the sky is blue.

Reasons not to believe

  • No-one can provide a rational reason[1] to believe.

Footnote:

  1. You might say "we will kill you if you don't believe" provides a rational reason to believe. Not so. It only provides a rational reason to pretend to believe.
