Here We Go Again - Poor, Persecuted Christians

The letter below appeared in the editorial section of our local newspaper two weeks after Easter Sunday:

“Easter Sunday is the single most important day in the lives of each and every person of any Christian faith. And yet, the front page headlines describe the importance of egg paquing* and an unfortunate car accident. Where is the true headline of the day: “Today is Easter Sunday”? This is not about religion, but about a story that truly reflects the interests and culture of your subscribers. The vast majority of people living in the Acadiana** are devout Christians, and for us the news of Easter trumps all other news. I suspect this is an attempt to be “politically correct,” which really translates into “scared to ruffle feathers.” If so, your misguided attempt not to offend certain groups by choosing to omit the biggest headline of the day, Easter Sunday, has certainly succeeded in insulting and incensing one practicing Catholic in me (and I suspect many others). If it was out of ignorance of the importance of this headline, then you surely must educate yourself more fully on the interests of the people you claim to represent and serve. But, first and foremost, you owe an apology to every Christian living in the Acadiana area, whether they subscribe to your paper or not, for this slap in the face.”

Once again, poor Christians in the good old U.S. are under attack! Slapped in the face by the media! War on Christmas! Down with Easter!

These pathetic people don’t realize how good they have it. They can go to any church they want. They can listen to preachers tell them how to vote. They can turn around and try to tell the rest of us how to believe and behave. The churches pay no taxes, and they are being persecuted because the newspaper rightly decides not to promulgate mythology on the front page?

I mean, if you were being forced to hide in catacombs to avoid being fed to the lions because of your beliefs, sure, you are persecuted. If not, get over yourself.

Notes:

* "egg paquing": A Cajun Easter tradition involving knocking painted hard-boiled eggs against each other. "Paquing" comes from the French word for Easter, Pâques. For more: A look at the Cajun tradition of egg 'paquing'

** "Acadiana": (Cajun French: L'Acadiane), is the official name given to the French Louisiana region that is home to a large Francophone population. Of the 64 parishes that make up Louisiana, 22 named parishes and other parishes of similar cultural environment make up the intrastate region. For more: Wikipedia
