Re-Imagining Religion: the right to choose our beliefs

I dream of a religion that believes every human has the right to choose their beliefs, not a religion that proclaims we must believe this or that, but a religion that believes every human has the right to choose their beliefs, as individuals, as a community and as a society.

I dream not of a religion that simply decrees we must believe this or that, a religion where the upper echelons decree that we must believe this or that for whenever the powerful few decree they know best, they are reluctant to admit they might be wrong, and when they decree they are infallible, they refuse to acknowledge others might be wiser than they.

instead, I dream of a religion that asks people what they are willing to believe, a religion that believes if they give people good, accurate information, people will make good, sound choices, a religion that provides people with their choices, the benefits and problems of each choice.

I dream of a religion that has the courage to honour people’s choices, a religion that has the audacity to revisit those choices every generation, granting every generation the authority to decide what they are willing to believe and what they cease believing.

I dream of a religion that trusts people to decide what they are willing to believe and what they are willing to believe, a religion that believes if people make a mistake together, they share the folly  and they will correct their err together.
