Yes, I have friends with whom I would discuss sex, but not religion, as well as religion, but not sex. I think the point is that it's the same sort of discretion. There is a very significant difference between what's said intimately among friends who know each other's little quirks, and what is said among acquaintances and coworkers.

As a general guideline for behavior in general social situations, it works well. Like any generic rule or guideline, it fails under many conditions. Overall, it works.
