The blame game

In the week following the mass killings by a lone gunman in an Aurora, Colorado cinema there have been numerous attempts to assign the blame all over the political and religious spectrum.

Quite frankly, there is no way to assign blame right now. We do not know the cowardly killer's motivation, and it is possible we never will. But what we can say with a high degree of certainty is that the finger pointing by Christian fundamentalists is totally unwarranted.

No, it had nothing to do with the teaching of evolution in schools.

No, it had nothing to do with the increasing acceptance of same-sex relationships.

No, it had nothing to do with people standing up for the separation of church and state in the USA.

No, it had nothing to do with attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs and the the weakening of Christian values.

No, it had nothing to do with the "sins" of anyone with the exception of the gutless shooter.

No, it had nothing to do with a supposedly omnipresent loving God turning away because some people had the nerve to not believe in him.

No, it had nothing to do with civil libertarians have chasing away the fear of God in the land.

The only thing we know is that throughout recorded history there have been cases of one person killing many in a rampage. It happened before there were guns. Individuals went berserk with battle axes; they ran amok with machetes; they killed with broadswords and with fire. The stories are embedded in mythology, folk tales and horror, as well as relatively more recent historical and news accounts. It is unfortunately nothing new - the occasional murderous nutjob seems to be an element of the human condition. And while we do not know the root cause, we can safely state the cause is not people exercising rational thought instead of blindly following religion. Rather, if there is a solution to limit future massacres, it will be found through rational thought, and not through demanding adherence to ancient superstitions.
