A Miscellany 301
Maiden's Prayer

by: Anonymous

Editor's note: I find this little poem, which apparently has never found its way onto the web before, amusing on a number of fronts. It dates back to at least 1871 when it was quoted in a letter by Hugh John MacDonald. 1871 may have been the Victorian Age, but even then, they had a wicked sense of humor.

MAIDEN'S PRAYER

Mary mother, we believe
That without sin thou did conceive,
Teach us, we pray thee, us believing,
How to sin without conceiving.
